Where is Alexandra?
Located in the foothills of Australia's Great Dividing Range, the township of Alexandra is nestled in a beautiful valley at the meeting of the Yea and Goulburn Rivers. With a population of around 2,200, Alexandra is just 130 Km's north-east of Melbourne, the State Capital of Victoria. Access to Alexandra can be from the southern corridor or from the west after exiting the Hume Freeway.
Alexandra is also a gateway to Lake Eildon and its National Park as well as a popular stop over and rest stop location for year-round visitors who in winter are heading into the snow fields.
More About Alexandra
The town itself is a town of parklands, which are an ideal place to picnic or commence a heritage walk around the town. Many historic buildings from the 1880's still stand including the Shire Hall which was constructed in 1881. Life moves at a more relaxed pace here and this is reflected by the friendly welcome that visitors receive from the locals. In recent times, a makeover of the main Grant St shopping area has made the street into a recreational meeting place for locals and visitors. Annual festivals and activities focus here. During summer the street comes alive with free musical entertainment from the rotunda, which is located on the streets centre plantation.
The Locals
A lexandra is the focus of a local farming community and whilst many residents work in the agricultural and allied industries, the timber industry also features strongly. The infrastructure to support these plus the leisure and tourist industry covers most occupations. With the local rivers and the playground of Lake Eildon on our doorstep, many thousands of water-skiers and fishermen share vacations with some 800 permanently located luxury houseboats.
Sporting clubs and activities carry a strong following, with football, cricket and netball teams seasonally travelling hundreds of kilometres in search of keen competition. Golf, Tennis, Squash, Lawn Bowls and Fishing are some other well supported clubs.
Alexandra has three schools. the Alexandra State Primary School, St Marys Catholic Primary School and the Alexandra Secondary College.

Visitors to the region are invited to obtain a copy the seasonal publication "Murrindindi Magic". This is produced by the Standard Newspaper, for Murrindindi Regional Tourism Association, and features information, maps and a calendar of events in Murrindindi Shire. Copies are available free of charge from Visitor Information Centres, and from many retail shops throughout the Shire.
Two radio station's which transmits throughout the Eildon area, regularly announces community events and news. UGFM 106.9 and STAR FM 93.7
