Eildon Township Tourist Information
THE 'DAM'
Where is Eildon?
Eildon is located a pleasant 2 hour drive and approximately 140km's north-east of Victoria's state capital, Melbourne. Crossing Australia's Great Dividing Range takes you into a different world away from, but not too far from the hustle and bustle of city life. This is why Eildon has become a year round short break destination for 'Melbournites', as well as an annual vacation destination for couples and families escaping for a few weeks.
More About Eildon
Whilst the town of Eildon has a permanent population of around 650 people, and is now essentially tourism based, the town itself has an interesting history.
With the local rivers and Lake Eildon on its doorstep, many thousands of water-skiers, pleasure boaters, and fishermen, share vacations with some 800 permanently located luxury houseboats. Many of these houseboats are a private home away from home which can accommodate 10 or more people. Lake Eildon is not a closed catchment and has a shoreline of almost 600 Kilometres when at full supply. Its prime function is provide irrigation for food production areas of the lower Goulburn River
Anywhere up to 30,000 people per day take advantage of boating and all forms of watersport in the region during summer.
A visit to Victoria's Marine and Freshwater Research Institute and Hatchery at Snobs Creek is a must, and you will also enjoy some magnificent wildlife.
The newly created Lake Eildon National Park features the former highly regarded Fraser National Park with some great walking tracks and many lakeside established camping areas. Another big attraction of the area can be seen in the growing number of 4WD enthusiasts who have discovered the unique beauty and adventure to be experienced in our mountainous areas.
The Locals
Whilst many residents work in the agricultural and allied industries, the timber industry also features strongly. The infrastructure to support these, power generation, irrigation plus the leisure and tourist industry covers most occupations.
Life is very relaxed in the Eildon area. The clean mountain air and open spaces mean we all spend a lot of time outdoors. Eildon has a good sense of community which is rare in these times. This is illustrated by the way this small town managed to win the Tidy Towns State Award for 1992, and has been a finalist town in more recent times. The town has some great walking tracks to be explored. Many of these were established by the "Tidy Towners Group".
Eildon has a State Primary School located in the township. The manicured school grounds make many larger schools envious, because these facilities have catered for fewer than 100 pupils in recent times.
The local Lions Club has purpose built a pier over the Eildon Pondage so as to enable fishing access to the disabled. Another community project by the Lions has been to construct an island in the pondage as a wildlife sanctuary.
