MORE than 2000 boat and jet-ski users were fined in summer for poor safety equipment, speed and licensing offences.
The fines are almost double those for the same period last year, when police handed out 1286 fines over the three months.The fines follow a water police blitz at popular holiday destinations including Port Phillip Bay, Western Port Bay, Lake Eildon, Portland, Gippsland and Wilsons Promontory. Of the 2084 fines, 1108 were in December, 660 in January and 316 in February.
Most of the fines were issued in Western Port and Port Philip bays.
